MultiVersus Announced, Free-to-Play Brawler out in 2022

Last month, we saw leaked images of a new fighting game that featured several Warner Bros. franchises battling against each other. The leaks look legit given how well done the art and ideas laid out were. Today, Warner Bros. has pulled back the curtain on MultiVersus, with a new trailer showcasing what fans can expect to get when it launched next year.

MultiVersus, a free-to-play game, that introduces 2 vs 2 team-based battles and is in development at Player First Games.

According to Tony Huynh, Co-Founder and game director for Multiversus, the focus is on online cooperative gameplay, with characters having a deep set of combat mechanics to distinguish themselves from other brawlers.

We got a glimpse of some of the cast including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn (DC Super Heroes & DC Super-Villains); Shaggy (Scooby-Doo); Bugs Bunny (Looney Tunes); Arya Stark (Game of Thrones); Tom and Jerry (Tom and Jerry); Jake the Dog and Finn the Human (Adventure Time); Steven Universe and Garnet (Steven Universe).

First Player Games says combatants have customizable moves that “combine dynamically with other characters.” Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth, for example, pairs well with Shaggy’s sandwich projectile. Arya Stark’s face-swapping ability works well with Superman’s laser vision. We’ll see how these characters work together against backdrops including the Batcave, Jake and Finn’s Tree Fort, and more.

“With MultiVersus we are creating a distinct competitive game that allows us to combine a deep roster of celebrated WarnerMedia franchises for gamers to enjoy,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Games. “We are partnering with the talented team at Player First Games to bring together a free-to-play, online platform fighter with a wealth of iconic characters that fans know and love, from Wonder Woman and Bugs Bunny to Shaggy and Arya from Game of Thrones. And this is just the beginning, as we are excited to support upcoming seasons and ongoing game content.”

To make the experience more authentic, the studio recruited an all-star cast including Kevin Conroy, George Newbern, Abby Trott, Tara Strong, Matthew Lillard, Eric Bauza, Maisie Williams, John DiMaggio, Jeremy Shada, Daniel DiVenere, Estelle, and Andrew Frankel.
