They can break you, but not your promise
From the first moments of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, you are transported into a world where reality and illusion blend seamlessly, where every corner of the wild Icelandic landscape tells a story of pain and resilience.

The first installment already impressed us with its innovative storytelling approach and representation of mental health struggles. This sequel pushes these concepts further, offering a gaming experience that transcends simple mechanics to touch players’ emotions deeply.
Ninja Theory aims to create another sequel but an actual interactive work of art. The developers have worked tirelessly to offer us a universe where every detail counts, from the texture of the Icelandic landscapes to the surrounding sounds and the characters’ facial expressions. Every element of the game is designed to immerse players in Senua’s tormented psyche, making her journey as personal as it is captivating.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 goes to some incredible places
The story of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 picks up where the first game left off. After coming to terms with her inner demons at the end of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Senua returns with a new mission, more determined than ever. This time, she directly confronts the Viking marauders on their turf: Iceland. This change of scenery brings a welcome freshness and new opportunities to explore themes of psychosis and Norse mythology.

In this sequel, Senua is no longer a victim of her visions. She has learned to accept and use them to her advantage, turning what was once a curse into a strength. This character evolution is not only exciting but also incredibly powerful. It symbolizes resilience and the human capacity to overcome the darkest obstacles.
Deeper gameplay, deeper meanings
The gameplay of Hellblade 2 builds on the solid foundations laid by its predecessor, enriching them with new mechanics and greater depth. The iconic elements such as permadeath and rune-based puzzles are still present but with increased complexity and variety. They’re not as satisfying as the combat but are definitely necessary as they provide a bit of a break at times to keep the player engaged and not always on the edge of their seat. Hellblade 2 emphasizes exploration and puzzle-solving, integrating these aspects organically into the narrative and environments.

An interesting novelty is the way Senua interacts with the world around her. The Icelandic landscapes are not just static backdrops but active elements of the story and gameplay. Players will navigate through rugged terrain, snowy mountains, and dark caves, each location offering challenges and mysteries to solve. This immersion in such a rich and detailed environment adds an extra dimension to the gaming experience.
Combats significantly improved
Combat in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 has been significantly improved compared to the first game. Senua faces formidable enemies, both physical and mental. The fantastical creatures drawn from Norse mythology are more terrifying and varied, each requiring a different and strategic approach to defeat. Senua’s warrior skills are put to the test, and players will need to master a more dynamic and complex combat system. Some fights will even combine some sort of cutscenes merged with real gameplay, making it even more realistic. For example, the fight against that giant with the help of warriors and villagers while trying to deal with the voices in her head keeps distracting you because you want to listen to them voices but you have to make sure not to be in a position where your life is threatened.

Impressive audio design
One of the most impressive aspects of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is undoubtedly its sound design. Ninja Theory has used 3D binaural audio technology to create an immersive experience that plunges players into Senua’s tormented psyche. Voices and sounds come from all directions, creating an oppressive and often unsettling atmosphere. This level of sound detail helps reinforce the game’s emotional impact and fully immerse players in Senua’s world.

In collaboration with the Scandinavian folk music group Heilung, the soundtrack adds another dimension to this immersion. The dark and haunting music perfectly matches the game’s themes, accentuating moments of tension and calm with masterful precision. Every note and chant contributes to creating a unique atmosphere that envelops players and transports them to a world where myths and reality intertwine. Did you know that to achieve such a sumptuous audio track, Ninja Theory brought Heilung to Iceland to perform outdoors, allowing the band to immerse themselves in the environment?
A journey unlike any other
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is one of the first games developed with Unreal Engine 5, and the result is simply breathtaking. The developers at Ninja Theory have used this cutting-edge technology to push the boundaries of graphical realism and immersion. The Icelandic landscapes are rendered with incredible precision, with every detail and every texture carefully recreated to offer an unparalleled visual experience. Even though the game runs at 30FPS, you will be blown away by the stunning visuals.
If you’re wondering just how breathtaking the graphics are, let me tell you that my wife was surprised because she thought at first that I was watching a movie on Netflix or Amazon Prime until she spotted the Xbox controller in my hand. She sat down and watched me play with a curious and somewhat disturbed look. She didn’t understand the multiple voices she was hearing and thought Senua was schizophrenic since she hadn’t played the first title. In fact, she plans to play it or, at the very least, to ask me to play it.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 exceeds all my expectations. I completed it twice in days, but be aware that it is an emotional and psychological odyssey that pushes the limits of what a video game can be. Ninja Theory has successfully created an interactive work of art that profoundly touches players, immersing them in a world of intertwined myths and realities.
Senua’s captivating story, intense and strategic combat, the richness of its gameplay, the depth of its audio design, and the stunning graphics offered by Unreal Engine 5 make Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 an essential experience. It is an exploration of the human soul and a celebration of resilience and courage in the face of darkness.

You live the odyssey of a warrior plunged into the darkness of her psyche.
