Moonlighter developer Digital Sun has launched its next game, Cataclismo, in Steam Early Access this week. Until August 5th, players can purchase the game at a 20 percent discount, costing $23.99 ($29.99 base price).
The gameplay is a fusion of RTS (real-time strategy) and tower defence, set in a dark fantasy epic as the last of humanity tries to survive as their corrupted world and endless waves of monstrous creatures attempt to destroy what’s left of their race. The game is survival, and humanity builds up their fortress with LEGO-like brick-by-brick during the day as they defend themselves at night from the forces that wish to destroy them.
At launch in early access, Cataclismo will feature a fully voiced campaign that includes a tutorial and eleven other levels with two biomes to start, as more will be added during the game’s early access development. Additionally, the game is packed with skirmish and endless modes, plus a comprehensive and detailed level editor that will let players create their levels, which they can share with other players. This adds more replayability to the game this early on, but Digital Sun says more content is coming in the Early Access phase, alongside biomes, more features, modes, new levels, and additional content will be added.
“It’s been more than five years since we released Moonlighter, and we owe every bit of success to our players’ support. Whether Cataclismo is your first Digital Sun game, or you’ve stuck around since Will’s grand adventure, we’re grateful you’ve joined us on this journey,” Digital Sun said in a Steam news update post.
In line with other successful early access launches like the original Hades and Baldur’s Gate 3, the developer says that “player input will be a pivotal part of our game.” The game just launched, so no release date for the 1.0 version was revealed but Digital Sun did say that the plan for Cataclismo is to be in early access “at least through the first months of 2025.”
