Stellar Blade Video Game Releases

Yoko Taro Says Stellar Blade Is “Much Better” Than Nier: Automata

In an interview with IGN Japan at Shift Up’s studio in Seoul, South Korea, Hyung-Tae Kim and Yoko Taro met to discuss their respective successes.

The pair also mentioned how they share similarities and respect for each other and issues, including Asian video games and why they wanted to make video games.

In the same interview, Taro said that Stellar Blade is much better than Nier: Automata. Taro says he believes the graphics are of next-gen quality with amazing character designs when pressed for an answer to why he thinks that.

“The graphics are completely next-gen quality and the character design’s direction is amazing. The cool male characters and cute female characters unique to Mr. Kim’s style are really appealing,” says Taro on Stellar Blade. “Shops in RPGs often have a close-up shot of the shopkeeper, which I don’t like because I think it feels unnatural. Stellar Blade has a shot like that too, but the shopkeeper was so cute that I didn’t mind! Her cuteness felt more important than any design choice.”

He later says that EVE is “really appealing” too and that the art style appeals to a Japanese audience. “If you were to show someone that has no prior knowledge NieR: Automata and Stellar Blade, I think almost all of them would pick Stellar Blade. A white-haired character like 2B is not as conventional.”

Kim later praises Taro’s character 2B, saying she’s special because of her clothes, white hair, eye patch and character design.

On inspirations that helped create Stellar Blade, Kim points to manga, anime, and games from the 1980s and ’90s and Nier: Automata. “Stellar Blade is simply a culmination of inspirations from my favourite culture and reinterpreting that for modern times,” reveals Kim.

In the same interview, Kim mentioned that he loves Bayonetta 2, which is one of his favourite games of all time. He also mentions readers should play more PlatinumGames titles.

Stellar Blade stars Eve as she battles the Naytibas, an alien force destroying Earth, sending humanity to a space colony. Eve and her comrades land on the surface to reclaim the extinct Earth and cross paths with a survivor named Adam. Adam then leads Eve to the last surviving city, Xion, where she meets the elder of the town, Orcal and is told many stories. To serve her mission to save Earth, Eve develops close relationships with the key members of Xion and contributes to rebuilding the city.

Stellar Blade will launch for PlayStation 5 on April 26, 2024.
