Yars Rising, A Metroidvania Reboot of Classic Atari IP From WayForward Announced For PC and Consoles In 2024

Set to Launch in 2024

As part of today’s Nintendo Indie World presentation, Atari has announced Yars Rising, a Metroidvania reboot of its classic Atari 2600 title, Yars’ Revenge and is set to launch on PC and consoles sometime later this year.

This project is in collaboration with, of course, the IP owner, Atari and with development being handled by Way Forward, better known for their work on games like the Shantae series, River City Girls, and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp. The upcoming 2024 game is a definite new direction while honouring the original 1982 Atari game, which was much more of a shooter in the classic age of gaming that saw players team up with the titular insect creature, The Yar, as they attempt to take down the evil being known as Qotile.

“Wayforward’s proven story-telling and world-building powers made them a perfect choice for reimagining one of Atari’s most enduring game franchises. I am confident that fans are going to enjoy this new, dynamic chapter in the Yars storyline,” Atari CEO Wade Rosen said in a statement.

Players planning to pick up Yars Rising will play from the perspective of younger hacker, Emi Kimura as she takes on a job from a mysterious client to infiltrate the shadowy QoTech corporation. In this science fiction setting, Wayforward title players can blast, run, jump, and sneak along the way. This 2D game features beautiful 3D backgrounds by which to get distracted. Some other features in the game include a bevy of retro minigames plus stealth and hacking sections that reveal more of Qotech and Emi’s role in all this.

Yars Rising will launch on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS in 2024.
