Square Enix revealed a new game in the Valkyrie series today during the PlayStation State of Play. The news comes nearly two decades after the last console game, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria launched for PlayStation 2.
Enter Valkyrie Elysium, an entirely new entry that is set to launch later this year for PlayStation consoles and PC, featuring a new protagonist who must save the world from Ragnarok at the behest of the All-Father. The unnamed Valkyrie will face various enemies as she uses her powers to prevent the end of the world.
Interestingly, the series is moving away from a traditional battle system to an active battle system where the player can move freely about in combat. This is a big change for the series as it is also not developed by tri-Ace rather Soleil Ltd. is taking the helm as it seems the original developer is working on Star Ocean The Divine Force.
On the PlayStation Blog, Square Enix revealed more about the upcoming project, including the return of classic gameplay elements like Einherjar — recruitable warriors who will fight alongside the hero.
Thankfully, Motoi Sakuraba returns to score the series alongside Yuya Nagai working on character designs. Square Enix says the game will run at 4K and 60 frames per second on the PS5.
Valkyrie Elysium will launch later this year.
