Speaking to IGN, the main reason Telltale is delaying is to counter any crunch and team burnout, in addition, the move from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 has led to delays.
Telltale Games CEO Jamie Ottilie explains that the re-established Telltale has struggled with the challenges of building a studio during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Work on The Wolf Among Us 2 is proceeding well but the decision to move to a new engine meant the studio could now add new features, which led to the team redoing “quite a bit of work.”
If the project was to ship in 2023, it would have either been unfinished or to crunch for the rest of the project, which is what led the original Telltale Games to close.
