Lord of the Rings

Embracer Partners With Amazon For The Lord of the Rings MMO.

Embracer Group is looking to get the most out of its purchase from last year, one that saw the company acquire the rights to both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings IPs.

Under the Middle-earth Enterprises subsidiary and with help from Amazon Games, a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien is in the works.

The upcoming MMO will feature a persistent world set in Middle-earth. Few details are available at the moment as the project is in the early planning stages but the team at Amazon Games Orange County and developer of New World is helping with this project which is set for consoles and PC.

“We’re committed to bringing players high-quality games, whether through original IPs or long-beloved ones like The Lord of the Rings,” said Christoph Hartmann, VP, of Amazon Games.

“Bringing players a fresh take on The Lord of the Rings has long been an aspiration for our team, and we’re honoured and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises is entrusting us with this iconic world. We’re also pleased to be expanding our relationship with Embracer Group following our Tomb Raider deal last year, as they’ve proven to be excellent collaborators.”

This announcement is the second time Amazon has attempted to get a Lord of the Rings MMO off the ground, with the first project being announced back in 2019 before being canceled in 2021.

Amazon acknowledged that while it produces The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for Prime Video, the upcoming MMO is unrelated to the show, which is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth.
