The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will land on consoles and PC later this year, Nacon and Daedalic Entertainment have announced.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is based on the trilogy of novels from famed author J. R.R Tolkien. In Gollum, the developers put you in the role of the former ring bearer Gollum and it is set after Bilbo Baggins steals the ring. You’ll explore Middle-earth including the Misty Mountains, the dungeons of Barad-Dur, and the realm of the Wood-elves in Mirkwood.
Initially announced in 2019, Gollum has seen several delays over the last few years with the last one bumping Daedalic’s take on the franchise out of September 2022 and into 2023. For fans of the source material, this may not be the familiar take you’ve known for years now but it is exciting seeing a point in this fabled history that shows us what Gollum was up to and who he encountered.
Having to struggle with Smeagle and Gollum’s inner darkness as a gameplay mechanic may not work as intended knowing what the One Ring is capable of, I’d like to see how the developer approaches these situations.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum launches on May 25, 2023, for Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. A Switch port is coming later.
