The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom Sells Over 10 Million Copies

Nintendo‘s latest title, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, has sold through 10 million copies in the first three days of being on sale.

The news shouldn’t be surprising to anyone given the series’ pedigree and stature within the industry, but it is nice to see a definitive number just three days after one of the biggest games this year launched around the world.

Nintendo indicates over four million copies were sold in the Americas, with around 2.24 million units sold in Japan.

“Many players are returning to Hyrule with all its new mysteries and possibilities, and with the record-breaking launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for Nintendo Switch, we can’t wait to see what they’ll create in the game and the stories they’ll share next,” said Susan Pennefather, General Manager, Nintendo of Canada. “We’re grateful for all of our fans who’ve shown their passion for The Legend of Zelda over the years, and these sales numbers for the latest installment continue to show the strong momentum for both the franchise and Nintendo Switch this year.”

In my review of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, I said, “The new abilities and freedom Tears of the Kingdom offers are nothing short of staggering. You’re given an overwhelming sense of autonomy from the opening moments, energy, and understanding that the developers trust the player and give them the tools to succeed and engage in a world affected by Ganondorf’s return. The Upheaval has left a significant mark on the world of Hyrule, giving way to islands in the sky and caves throughout the land. This design is some of the best I’ve ever seen in a video game because it guides the player but never points you to where to go or what to do.”
