The Division 2’s Dark Zone Will Be Smaller Than Manhattan’s Dark Zone

I’m unsure how I feel about this decision but I understand why they are doing this. Ubisoft revealed today that the Dark Zones – the areas where PvP and PvE coincide together, is shrinking and along with that player counts are dropping from 24 to 12.

Over on the official website, Ubisoft posted a multiplayer overview, which breaks down how the Dark Zones work, and more information about them. The good thing about this is that this will allow the servers to handle capacity better. Granted, what made the Dark Zones so interesting was how empty these zones felt and how scary that was to me. Now, it’s more about getting into action and seeing others, hopefully without engaging each other.

  • Dark Zone East—the largest of all three Dark Zones, players utilize long sightlines in over-grown governmental parks.
  • Dark Zone South—the smallest of the Dark Zones, emphasis is placed on close-quarters combat. Sightlines are easily broken with large interiors and choke points.
  • Dark Zone West—split into two parts by a large canal, Georgetown is characterized by medium-range engagements and features European style architecture.
