Tales of Kenzera: Zau Developer Surgent Studios Reportedly Laying Off Staff

Surgent Studios, the developer better known for its debut game this year, Tales of Kenzera: Zau, is reportedly being impacted by layoffs, according to Game Developer.

The news comes a bit over two months after Tales of Kenzera: Zau‘s April 23rd launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch under the EA Originals banner, which garnered a 76 on Metacritic from critics. It is still in the early days, so there is no confirmed number of layoffs yet. However, for now, three former employees have announced they have been let go from the company on LinkedIn and on BlueSky.

“The chapter entitled “Pete Works At Surgent Studios” is coming to a close at the end of the month,” former Surgent Studios level designer Peter Brisbou said in a LinkedIn post.

“Well, it looks like I’m joining all the people affected by industry layoffs this year,” former Surgent technical artist Jordan Smee said in a LinkedIn post.

“Well, I’ve officially been laid off, as expected. S**t sucks,” former Surgent Studios producer that goes by the name Raysura said on BlueSky.

The news of the layoffs follows the studio’s founder, Abubakar Salim, denouncing the “constant targeted harassment” against him and the development team while announcing at the end that Tales of Kenzera: Zau is getting a slight discount via Nintendo Life.
