Take-Two Gets Into A Trademark Dispute with Remedy’s Newest 2023 ‘R’ Logo Design Similarities

Although can you really claim ownership of one alphabet letter pertaining to game developer logos in this market?

The Grand Theft Auto (GTA) publisher, Take Two, really loves the letter ‘R’ so much that it’s getting into a trademark dispute over Remedy’s revitalized approach to its logo design, which was filed in the United Kingdom’s Intellectual Property Office in May 2023 after it was first unveiled in April 2023, according to RespawnFirst’s initial report on the matter.

“The bullet in the letter R in the old logo represented the era of Max Payne, but the Remedy of now is much bigger than a single game; we have a whole portfolio of games, new and old. It was time to update and redefine our visual identity to bring more consistency, showcase our evolution over the years, and better express our vision of today’s Remedy,” the company said in a blog post unveiling the logo.

Remedy’s newest logo features a stylized ‘R’ logo featuring the company’s name below that Take-Two had a problem with due to the similarities to Rockstar Games’ logo and the belief that “there exists a likelihood of confusion on the part of the public.” Looking at both logos, the only similarity is the letter, as the visual flare and colour each is going for are different enough to make them unique.

Take-Two is making a case to hold its weird obsession of having Rockstar Games as the only game developer in town with an ‘R’ logo, which has been ongoing since September 2023. It’s not the only time Take-Two had a trademark dispute with a developer about brand identity; in 2021, following Hazelight Studios’ trademark application of its Game of The Year winning co-op platformer, It Takes Two, the GTA company laid claim to the “Takes Two” part of the trademark due to its ownership over the name which Hazelight would later abandon in late 2021 and not comment on, according to VGC at the time.

We’ll see how or if this works out as Remedy and Rockstar are working partners on the upcoming Max Payne and Max Payne 2 remakes launching on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series ; there might be some awkwardness.
