Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Pyra and Mythra Launch Today

Pyra

Today began with a coffee and another episode of Mr. Sakurai Presents, a staple for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans as it introduced and explained the two new fighters that are coming to the game later today. Spending over an hour showcasing Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, two more sword fighters join the roster but somehow feel different than what we’ve seen before.

Some background: in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, humans are able to control Blades in battle. They are essentially an extension of the user (called Drivers) but they are described as weaponized lifeforms. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pyra and Mythra shared their life force, and while these two share the same selection screen, you can alternate between them in battle. Mythra is agile while Pyra is a strong combatant and by utilizing both at the right time you can keep opponents guessing. Together, they are Blades for the protagonist Rex in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Paired with these two new fighters is the Cloud of Sea Alrest stage, which is based on the setting found in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. In the game, humans live on the back of massive creatures, this one being Azurda. As Azurda moves through the clouds, players will see sights and faces from the game, and it’s an excellent way to pay tribute to Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Currently, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features three songs from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but after downloading Challenger Pack 9, that number jumps to 19 tracks!

It’s also pretty funny to see Rex call out the fact he was supposed to be a fighter but instead, he’s now joining the series as a Mii Fighter skin. In total, there are also three new outfits based on Monster Hunter Rise, and the fourth one including Arthur, celebrating Ghosts ‘n Goblins.

Pyra and Mythra will be available later today with the Cloud Sea of Alrest stage for $7.55 CAD.
