After Sony acquired Insomniac Games last month, talk surrounding the acquisition included who owned the rights to Insomniac’s once Xbox exclusive Sunset Overdrive.
We learned that in fact, Sunset Overdrive wasn’t owned by Microsoft, but Insomniac, which came as a shock in itself. Microsoft has the publishing rights but Insomniac owns the property. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden said he’d have to look into the purchase to learn who owns the rights, which seems like they did in fact “turned over the files,” and learned they do own the rights. Thanks to Shuhei Yoshida coming through and confirming to Japanese magazine Inside Games, that this was the case.
As for whether the means we’re getting a sequel to 2014 hit from Insomniac. As it is, Sony is quite happy with how Marvel’s Spider-Man and Ratchet and Clank perform on PlayStation so we’re likely to see those properties before anything else.
