After last week’s premature release date announcement, it looks like we can now confirm that Streets of Rage 4 is coming this month, according to Dotemu.
To celebrate the launch date reveal, a new trailer for Streets of Rage4’s Battle Mode is here and if that sounds familiar, it’s because the mode was also in Streets of Rage 2 and 3. Battle Mode lets you pick your favourite fighters and test your skills against your friends in several of the levels found in the game. You can use the characters from Streets of Rage 4, and the retro characters revealed last week.
Streets of Rage 4 is the first game in over 25 years, which reunites Axel, Blaze, and Adam as well as introducing new characters. There’s also more depth to the combat, as well as a new, striking art style and a killer soundtrack thanks to Olivier Derivière, as well as series composers Yūzō Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima.
Cyrille Imbert, an Executive Producer at Dotemu took to the PlayStation Blog to talk about the game. In regards to the retro sprites, the idea came back when the game was being prototyped in the Guard Crush engine. At the time, no characters were ready to deploy so one of the game designers ripped the sprites from older Streets of Rage games and imported them. As development went on, the studio saw how good the sprites looked in the engine so they decided to keep them in and make them playable.
Streets of Rage 4 will hit PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC on April 30.
