Square Enix is once again remaking the original Star Ocean, only this time it’s going to be on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. The news was announced via the game’s official media channels and the name was revealed: Star Ocean First Departure R. Other than that, details are slim but it’s exciting for fans of the series.

Originally launching in 1996, the first game in the Star Ocean series never saw the light of day in the West. It wasn’t until 2007 that we got the game as a remake on the PlayStation Portable, followed by the second game as well. While we’re not exactly sure how Square Enix is planning on proceeding here, we do know this is a remake, of a remake – whatever that means.
I grew up playing Star Ocean: The Second Story and have a massive soft spot for that game. Presumably, if the first game does well enough, I’d like to think we’ll see the sequels on the Nintendo Switch at some point. The last few entries in the long-running series haven’t really scratched the itch I have for this series and it’s been a long time since I’ve genuinely enjoyed a Star Ocean video game. Maybe it’s to do with the way Square Enix treats the series like a budget title? Who knows.
More Star Ocean is always good to me.
