Square Enix Foams Up The Party Shooter With Foamstars

Square Enix is foaming up at the chance to get into the 4v4 party shooter genre with their latest title Foamstars.

Kosuke Okatani, the producer, calls it a fresh new take on the shooter genre, all based around the concept of “engaging in energetic foam battles that anyone can pick up and play.”

And that’s all well and good, but it’s hard to watch this reveal trailer and not see inklings drawn from games like Valorant, Ninjala, and Splatoon — leaning very heavily into the latter.

What makes this game fresh is the use of foam as both a weapon and an environment.

Unlike Splatoon’s densely packed city arenas, Foamstars’s city appears more open. You can build new terrain and fortifications out of foam.

“For instance, players can build up foam fortresses and shoot enemies from the top, surf on suds to traverse the battlefield, or even use foam to defend from enemy attacks,” says Okatani.

There also appear to be several character classes that also share similarities with Nintendo’s paint-slinging smash hit.

However, Foamstars could be a fine F2P co-op shooter for PS4 and PS5.
