I know I was a bit worried that there wasn’t any news of an upcoming sequel for the pretty funny Sonic the Hedgehog film that launched earlier this year. Thankfully, I don’t need to worry any longer because it’s now confirmed that we’re getting a sequel and it is scheduled for April 8, 2022.
Variety initially broke the news before Sonic himself took to Twitter to awkwardly(?) announce the sequel as well. Thankfully, after Sonic’s necessary makeover and a decent story that was full of charm and humour, the delay to February 2020 was needed to make this the best it could be – a gamble that paid off (even as Covid-19 took over). Sonic the Hedgehog went on to gross over $300 million against an $85 million budget. Not bad, I say.

Aside from Ben Schwartz returning as Sonic, there is no other information. We don’t know if director Jeff Fowler is coming back, or James Marsden, or writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Ideally, this team would return to work on the sequel but it’s too early to tell. Thankfully though, Jim Carrey seems keen on returning and the cliffhanger sure looks like it’ll pick up where it left off.
