Sony Interactive Entertainment Cuts 900 Jobs, Closes PlayStation London Studio

Sony Interactive Entertainment will cut 900 jobs and shutter its PlayStation Studios’ London Studio.

In a press release published this morning from Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios, we learned that several studios will face a reduction in workforce.

The affected studios include US-based developers Insomniac Games and Naughty Dog and the technology, creative, and support teams.

In the UK and Europe, the London Studio is shuttering entirely, and there will be fewer employees at Guerilla Games and Firesprite.

“These are in addition to some smaller reductions in other teams across PlayStation Studios,” says Hulst.

“Our goal at PlayStation Studios has always been to make the best games for PlayStation fans, and our global community of studios represent some of the most creative and talented teams within the gaming industry.

PlayStation 5 is in its fourth year, and we are at a stage where we need to step back and look at what our business needs,” continues Hulst.

He says the industry is experiencing “and continues” to see fundamental change in how games are made and played. Sustainable online and social experiences and the shift to mobile and PC require a “different approach and different resources.”

My heart goes out to those affected by this round of layoffs.
