Shift Up Releases Official GenAI Music Video; Fans Collectively Say No

Sometimes, you make things perky. And sometimes, you just make a bit of slop. That’s the case for Kim Hyung-tae, founder and CEO of Korean developer  Shift Up.

He’s achieved some level of fame for leading the development of 2024’s fantastic soulslike action-adventure RPG Stellar Blade.

The game, of course, starred over-sexualized battle maiden Eve, but there was reason and restraint to Eve and her cause that helped the game earn a stellar rating from me.

It would appear restraint is thrown out the window when it comes to promoting Evie — the new lead for the sequel, Stellar Blade: Blood Rain.

A music video called “Wanna be in LOVE” Feat. EVIE has been released on YouTube, revealing that it uses generative AI… and it’s… not great.

Looking hard enough beyond Evie gyrating at 30 FPS, there are nonsensical words and elements of the environment that simply don’t make sense.

There’s even a straight-up reference to K-Pop Demon Hunters.

Fans appear to be mostly non-supportive, and  Kim Hyung Tae has even professed to being in the wrong here.

I recall praising Stellar Blade for its world-building, atmosphere and sound design, and Shift Up has only grown in their abilities over the past couple of years. If they really wanted to, they could create something more visually and vocally pleasing.

Stellar Blade: Blood Rain is currently in production for PlayStation 5.
