At today’s Devolver Digital Direct, Grasshopper Manufacture announced it’s working on a remastered version of Shadows of the Damned; more information is set to be revealed at the developer’s dedicated show, Grasshopper Direct, which is set to happen on June 15th at midnight ET; probably being broadcasted so late due to Japan local time.
Shadows of the Damned is along the lines of a cult classic which was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 back in 2011 with Electronic Arts publishing the title, Shadows of the Damned was written in collaboration with Grasshopper’s studio head, Goichi “Suda51” Suda and Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil, Evil Within). Players play as a demon hunter named Garcia Hotspur, who tasks himself by rescuing his girlfriend from the Lord of Demons. In the trailer, we see a skit of Garcia barging into Grasshopper’s studio while killing a staff member; hostile work environment, am I right?
“We’re gonna be releasing the Shadows of the Damned Remaster! You can play it handheld, too (probably), And we’re gonna have to start thinking about that Volvy sequel,” Suda51 said in a Tweet following the official announcement.
Even though Electronic Arts published the original game all these years, it seems Grasshopper owns the rights to the IP, as the remastered version looks like a self-published title from the studio. Still, hopefully, we’ll get more verification on the details to see if this is true. The last time we saw Shadows of the Damned popped up was not too long ago as a level referring to the IP was featured in 2019’s No More Heroes spinoff, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes.
