While the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was a great little film to kick off 2020, it was also the last film many of us saw in theatres before the world went into a lockdown state. Regardless of the situation, Sonic became a box office hit and performed decently, going on to be one of the biggest movies of 2020. And not long after, a sequel was greenlit.
Recently, details about the sequel have come to light, and while it’s been known for quite some time both Tails and Knuckles were starring alongside Sonic, now we know how they’re joining. And the leak comes from the United States Copyright Office via the copyright catalogue.
From the listing, it looks like the humans, namely Tom and Maddie from the first film, head on a vacation, leaving Sonic alone to his devices. We know the Dr. Robotnik ended up on a terrestrial planet full of mushroom and somewhere after that he seemingly recruits Knuckles, who has it out for Sonic.
Here is the full synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog 2:
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Being directed by Jeff Fowler, and starring Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Ben Schwartz.
If this sounds familiar to you, that’s because it’s vaguely similar to the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which was the first time we met Knuckles after being lied to by Robotnik.
