In September, we saw the first official trailer for the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination and Nintendo Pictures. Overall, I found the reception to be positive for the trailer that offered a preview of Jack Black’s take on Bowser, Keegan Michael-Key’s take on Toad, and Chris Pratt’s take on Mario.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic with a screenplay from Matthew Fogel, the film is produced by Illumination’s co-founder Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo.
With the second trailer, we now have a better look at the Mushroom Kingdom and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. And as I had hoped, we finally got a look at Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong! We also saw a peek of Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The trailer also incorporated familiar elements fans of the franchise will know including a hilarious battle between Donkey Kong and Mario, platforming sections from the original Mario games, a look at the Tanooki Suit, and Mario Kart!
From the looks of it, this is going to be a faithful adaption of the series.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie lands in theatres on April 7, 2023.
