For the last couple of years, we have been in the era of video game adaptations, and Sea of Thieves is getting one now, too. A big gaming feature on EW focused on Xbox and its brand reset, alongside its upcoming movie and TV adaptations in the pipeline. Interviews with Xbox executives revealed that a live-action adaptation of Sea of Thieves is in the works.
It sounds like pretty early days for the production, as no director has been attached to the project, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Brand New Day director, Destin Daniel Cretton’s production company, Hisako Films, was revealed to be developing the film.
When it comes to story-focused games, people have more of an idea what type of narrative could be portrayed in a film, but for Sea of Thieves, the story you make is one you discover with your friends as you find out along the way what kind of shenanigans you’ll get up to in the game. If a Sea of Thieves movie does not go through development hell and actually happens, we’ll have to see what kind of movie it will be, and in an interview, Matt Booty talks about that.
“The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community. So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it’s not, Who are the main characters? What’s the plot? It’s a super social game, but there’s a tone to Sea of Thieves. It’s built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that’s going to be like,” Matt Booty said in an interview with EW.
Alongside a Sea of Thieves movie being developed at Xbox, its other adaptations include Gears of War and Minecraft, which are getting animated series at Netflix. The series looks to be coming alongside their live-action movie counterparts; Minecraft has a sequel coming next year, but no word on the Gears of War movie. On the other side, Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service has a live-action Wolfenstein show in the works, and a Fallout Shelter reality competition show is now filming as of writing.
