Now that I’ve seen the movie, I can finally sit down to play the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them Story Pack and Fun Pack for LEGO Dimensions. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them follows Newt Scamander on his adventure to America in the 1920s to do research for his book about the fantastic beasts of the magical world. Along with him he brought his suitcase that contains countless of these beasts and, of course, they don’t want to stay in the case. Wave 2 of LEGO Dimensions features 2 packs from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; the Story Pack which features Newt, a Niffler 3-in-1 mini-build, and the base (modeled after the MACUSA headquarters). The Fun Pack features Tina Goldstein and a Swooping Evil 3-in-1 mini-build.
Let’s begin with the build. The base was really fun to put together and it looks fantastic. It’s set to resemble the doors of the MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America) headquarters. The base includes a few interactive elements as well such as floating platforms and opening functional doors. Both minifigs are done extremely well and contain amazing detail. While almost perfect, one issue I have is that Newt’s hair is a bit too light. The mini-builds are a toss up for me. On one hand I love the Niffler build. It stands at just over 2 inches high and is almost as cute as its movie counterpart. On the other hand the Swooping Evil mini-build that came with the Fun Pack is a little disappointing and looks more abstract than anything else.
The game covers the events of the entire movie so it’s a pretty long, rich experience. The story pack is about 75% the length of the full price LEGO game for barely over half the price. Aside from the story there’s a brand new open world hub specifically for Fantastic Beasts, taking place in the hustle and bustle of 1920s New York. The hub features collectables to find and side quests to complete that will keep you busy for hours. I’m a big fan of Traveller Tales Game’s sense of humor and boy do I get a healthy dose in this game. The little things are nice too, like how Newt ‘interacts’ with Harry Potter if you decide to pop him onto the base.
New to LEGO Dimensions is the Battle Arena’s, and the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them arenas are pretty great. They take place within Newts briefcase (where else?) and you can choose between the Arctic Animal Habitat and the Arid Animal Habitat, each recreated brilliantly in LEGO form. The four game modes are incredibly fun (my favorite is Capture the Flag) and incredibly unique for a LEGO game and I hope it’s something they keep as they further expand the already massive game.
I had very few issues with these sets. The builds were good for the most part, the game was fun and there actually wasn’t too many graphical issues. One issue that kept coming up was that the VA work, which was just a little off. Obviously they’re not going to bring back the expensive actors to voice a couple additional lines for the LEGO game, so they hired a ‘sound-alike’. While they did a great job, sometimes it was very noticeable where I was like ‘hey this isn’t Eddie Redmayne’.
Newt had too many abilities. He can use levitation, illumination, flight, target, water spray, hazard cleaning, magical shield, Diffindo, and there’s even more. On top of ALL that he can also use Apparition and he can do some special things with his suitcase. This is a lot and I’ll admit I got a bit muddled on more than one occasion.
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Story and Fun Packs are some of the best expansions to LEGO Dimensions yet. The builds are great, the game is fun and plentiful, for the price you can’t go wrong picking up these packs. The new Battle Arena just adds to the list of things that you can do with this game. If you loved the movie I recommend these sets. If you love Harry Potter I recommend these sets. If you love LEGO Dimensions I definitely recommend these sets. The Story Pack sits at about $50 CAD right now while the Fun Pack is at $15 CAD. These would make perfect presents for those special ‘No-Maj’s’ in your life.
