Review: ASUS ROG Strix Flare RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

The ASUS ROG Strix Flare is a mechanical gaming keyboard that features German-made Cherry MX RGB switches for faster response times, performance, comfort, and customizable features that gamers are looking for.

Having used a traditional keyboard for many years, the transition to this mechanical keyboard took a few days to get familiar with. I immediately noticed the difference that 100% anti-ghosting and full key rollover makes as not a single key stroke was ever missed when typing or playing several games. My previous keyboard would constantly not identify strokes being made without a hefty press, so the process of going back to correct mistakes was a continual frustrating experience. This process is absent with the ROG Strix Flare and every keyboard stroke that takes place when trying to complete an article or looking to land a killing blow to an enemy.

Dedicated media controls located at the top of the keyboard are extremely handy for adjusting volume while in-game, or even controlling your music that is playing within such programs as Spotify. All of this can be done without minimizing applications, or your hand leaving the keyboard. Two USB cables are present as one is for the keyboard while the second is for USB passthrough which makes accessing files significantly more convenient from plugging in a USB key as you no longer have to reach for your tower’s ports. You are also able to connect peripherals such as a gaming mouse or headset to keep your area organized. The wrist wrest included can also be removed when not needed.

Customization and convenience are the key factors when describing the ROG Strix Flare. An illuminated acrylic ROG badge comes with the keyboard to showcase your pride of the design and performance, but a blank acrylic badge is also provided for you to personalize it with your own design. The ROG Strix Flare is not only a keyboard, but rather an extension of your own creative capacity.

The ROG Armoury II software is where you can fully customize the keyboard to your desire with regards to macros and lighting. Anyone who enjoys a well-lit keyboard will have a plentiful amount of settings to toggle between before discovering their favourite lighting style as each key is individually lit. My favourite styles are static, ripple, and wave. Colours can be selected within each mode to create an ambiance of your preference. The simplistic method of altering the colour scheme makes you casually shift between each lighting mode whenever you are looking for a change. There are six different profiles that can be saved with the on-board memory, so bringing the keyboard to a friend’s house for a LAN party will not lose any information that was selected previously. Users are also able to synchronize the effects across an ever-expanding ecosystem of Aura Synch products that will turn their system into a light show that will feature and showcase an endless spectrum of colours.

The ASUS ROG Strix Flare packs a lot of features within this beautifully lit keyboard. Any gamer or enthusiast looking to complete their setup will definitely want to pick up this keyboard.
