Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is looking to bring a lot more steam than expected, as during this morning’s LEVEL-5 Vision 2026 event showed off a new trailer that the game is also getting PC and PS5 versions, which the developer re-confirmed the game’s 2026 launch but is aiming to release “toward the end” of the year.
That’s pretty significant because, other than a handful of mobile ports, Professor Layton has been exclusive to Nintendo platforms so the latest game will mark the first time the franchise has made the jump to PC and PS5. For those still planning to pick up the game on their Nintendo device, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is still planned to release on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside the platform news, LEVEL-5 confirmed the game’s Japanese voice cast, puzzles will be designed by QuizKnock, and the game’s soundtrack will be composed by Joe Hisashi.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is the eighth mainline entry in the franchise and takes place one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (2010), set in Steam Bison, America. Professor Layton has been kind of a dormant franchise for Level-5, with the last main game was during the early years of the Nintendo 3DS with the conclusion of the prequel trilogy with Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy in 2013 but after that the most recent spinoff was released on the 3DS in 2017 and later came to Nintendo Switch in 2019.
