Polyarc, the developer of the adorable Moss series, has closed after 12 years.
Polyarc has done fantastic work in the VR space with their mouse-centric titles, with both Moss and Moss: Book II being great little adventures starring Quill. Both reviewed well but struggled to gain a foothold in the shrinking VR market, so much so that Polyarc brought them to regular TVs with Moss: The Forgotten Relic, combining the two.
Posting to LinkedIn, Polyarc said the following:
“Today is the end of an era for Polyarc. After nearly 12 years riding the joyous rollercoaster of emotions that is making video games, our time together has come to an end. As we wind down active development, we are saying our farewells to each other. Working together over all of these years has been an honor. Bringing surprise and delight to those who played our games has been a privilege. Thank you to everyone at Polyarc, our work is now finished. Polyarc has been home to exceptional developers across all disciplines. If you are hiring, please see the link below. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.
Updated reverse recruiting spreadsheet.
Polyarc’s first title, Moss VR, launched in 2018 and went on to spawn a sequel, Moss: Book 2 and then a non-VR version, which combined both entries earlier this year with Moss: The Forgotten Relic. Dave wrote, “Moss: The Forgotten Relic does a great job bringing two wonderful adventures to more players. It has a beautiful world and story with puzzles and action that are always rewarding.”
It’s another studio loss in an already awful year for talent in the video game industry, one rife with layoffs and closures. In just the last few months, we’ve seen incredible studios close, like Netflix’s Night School.
All the best to all the talented folks now looking for their next roles.
