Pokémon Global Link Service Ending Late February 2020

Time to pack things up and watch the sun go down on the Global Link Service, which is set to turn off February 24, 2020.

The Pokémon Company is shuttering the service after more than nine years of operation. In older titles, GLS was used to support online play, namely hosting your own competitions, view rankings and so on. However, with the recent release of Pokémon Sword and Shield, the service is no longer needed as the new games will not use Global Link Service.

In a statement on the webpage, the announcement reads, “After PGL service has ended, you will no longer be able to use any gameplay features that require a connection to the PGL on your Pokémon Ultra Sun, Pokémon Ultra Moon, Pokémon Sun, or Pokémon Moon games. You will still be able to use other online functionality apart from the PGL.”

Don’t fret though, as you’ll still be able to trade and battle Pokémon. Before the service shuts down for good, The Pokémon Company is handing out Fennels Munna, a character from the anime.
