PixelOpus, PlayStation First Party Developer Behind Concrete Genie is Closing its Doors

Bringing the company's first party line-up back down to 22 Internal Studios

PlayStation Studios’ developer behind Concrete Genie, PixelOpus has announced in a thankful statement on Twitter that it’s closing its door.

The news completely comes out of nowhere as we last heard in mid-2021 that the studio was reportedly working on a PS5 game being developed in Unreal Engine 5 in Collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation. Like anything on the internet, everyone’s hamster wheels started spinning wondering what the developer could possibly be working on leading to a lot of speculation that PixelOpus was developingon a SpiderVerse game; which we may never know if that was the case.

“Dear friends, our PixelOpus adventure has come to an end. As we look to new futures, we wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to the millions of passionate players who have supported us, and our mission to make beautiful, imaginative games with heart.  We are so grateful!”

PixelOpus was founded in 2014 and developed PS4 games like Entwined and Concrete Genie which the latter is definitely an underrated gem in PS4’s exclusive library. It has a special place in my heart as it was the first game I got to review for my school newspaper when I was a journalism student and spoke to me as it’s a dark, beautiful, and charming game with how it tackles the themes of pollution, bullying, and ultimately redemption. It’s a special game that you should pick up if you haven’t, we even reviewed it on the site.

“Pixelopus has a hit on their hands and offers one of the best-looking games on the PlayStation 4 today. Concrete Genie is a charming and expressive game that ultimately took me by surprise, which resonated with me more than I expected it too,” Bobby wrote in his Concrete Genie review.
