Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword moves its release date ahead from September 25 to September 4.
It is a move that was prematurely leaked a few weeks back, but is now official. And it’s the right move, given just how many games are set to launch in September (and October) in a bid to avoid Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6 November launch.
The new entry in the beloved franchise will star Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary Japanese figure, as he dons an Oni Gauntlet to battle demonic forces. Taking place in a corrupted Kyoto, the forces of Hell spill out, and Musashi gets supernatural abilities to help with the fight and defeat the Malice plaguing the city.
The series debuted in 2001 and has seen several entries, with its protagonists battling the Genma, demons bent on destroying Japan.
We went hands-on with Onimusha: Way of the Sword last month at Summer Game Fest, where Hayes Madsen wrote, “While the Onimusha series has long been a favourite of mine, I fully appreciate that it’s not one of Capcom’s more widely known. But with Way of the Sword, it feels like Capcom has found a way to give the series its broadest appeal ever — one that modernizes the action experience while keeping the franchise’s tenets alive. And even with the unbelievable run the company has been on, I think Way of the Sword could really be one of the standouts.”
Onimusha: Way of the Sword now launches on September 4, 2026, for Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and PC.
