Crazy to think it’s been five months since Nvidia showed off DLSS 5 and the internet instantly hated the tech’s yassified generative AI slop filter that “upscale” a game’s visuals. Now an unfinished version of the tech has leaked online via an early access build of NBA 2K27 and last night modders has already scrapped off DLSS 5 from the game and applied the tech to other games, according to Kotaku.
Those looking for the tech in the build were able to find the 158 MB “nvngx_dlssnr.dll” library file under the named version, 310.8.0.0 of NVIDIA DLSSNR and included the unreleased runtime for DLSS 5 Neural Rendering, according to VideoCardz. When DLSS 5 is applied to other games like Control, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas gives us another look at the uncanny valley dead-eye filter to characters.
Seeing a yassified Cloud or this case, Claude makes them look more like Scarlett Johansson than the “ex-solider” from Nibelheim we’ve seen re-visualized in the Remake trilogy. My honest reaction to seeing it, like with the DLSS 5’s official debut with Resident Evil requiem and Starfield, the visuals just looks it straight up just ages up characters as it takes away a game’s unique art style while applying the incredibly distasteful uninspired look that it’s all the generative AI content I’ve exposed to on my feed over the years.
The kicker to DLSS 5 being leaked online is that the tech is using up a lot of resources to run games and thanking them by quite a margin when turned on as one modder in the RenoDX Discord are seeing an “almost 50 percent performance loss” in one test. A RTX 5060 card with DLSS 5 turn on is seeing its FPS count go from 86 all the way to 34.
