Nintendo Officially Confirms Pikmin 4 with a Switch Release Set for 2023

If you were going into today’s Nintendo Direct presentation hoping for Pikmin to make an appearance on the game showcase, well you got exactly what you were hoping for in the form of a new mainline Pikmin game. During the presentation longtime Nintendo game designer, producer and game director, Shigeru Miyamoto appeared on stage to officially announce Pikmin 4 will be releasing sometime next year exclusively on Nintendo Switch. To celebrate we got a quick 35-second tease of the game which featured beautiful environments, characters, and a logo reveal of the game which Miyamoto was wearing on his shirt afterward.

“Nintendo Switch has made controlling the game simpler, meaning you can concentrate on the core essence of Pikmin gameplay. We call it Dandori in Japanese, or strategically planning, deploying, and commanding the Pikmin,” Miyamoto said about Pikmin 4 during the Nintendo Direct presentation.

The reveal feels like it has been a long time coming as the game has been in sort of development hell dating back to 2015 when we first heard about the game but over the years since then, development was seemingly progressing slowly. According to a report from My Nintendo News last year, Fanbyte’s Imran Khan and Nintendo insider, Emily Rogers revealed that development on Pikmin 4 was reportedly rebooted in 2019.

Nintendo obviously never confirmed this but if true it looks like the reboot was ultimately best for Pikmin 4 as it’s heading way to Pikmin fans exclusively on Nintendo Switch next year. The 2023 game will be the first game in the series developed for the Nintendo Switch, while the previous entry was released on the Switch as a deluxe version of the Pikmin 3 – the original first released during the launch year of the Wii U almost a decade ago at this point.
