Square Enix has announced that the PlatinumGames developed NieR: Automata has sold 7.5 million copies since launching in February 2017. The sales figure includes the most recent NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, which launched on the Nintendo Switch this year.
In 2017, many people had their first introduction to the NieR series with NieR: Automata. In the years that followed, the once cult series has become a big property for Square Enix and for good reason. PlatinumGames developed Automata with help from Yoko Taro and the final product is easily one of the most exciting action games in recent memory. Six years ago, all people were talking about was how brilliant the collaboration was.

While Square Enix is usually left feeling disappointed by software sales, NieR: Automata has been a massive hit for the publisher. With PlatinumGames’ stellar follow-up being critically and commercially well-received, and a new anime airing based on Automata, it seems like we’re in for a long and healthy relationship with the series.
Here’s hoping Square Enix continues to support the franchise and Yoko Taro wants to continue making new NieR games. As it stands, I know I’d love to see where a third console game could go.
