Kotaku’s Jason Schreier reports that this year’s Call of Duty will serve as a soft reboot of the series, and the fourth entry will simply be called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It’s a confusing decision a likely one.
The news originally came from YouTuber LongSensation, in a tweet posted today. According to Schreier, Activision is showcasing the next Call of Duty to influencers and press for a few weeks as of now, which is likely where this leak came from. Kotaku confirmed sources close to the project confirmed a soft reboot for the long-running series and is in development by Infinity Ward set for release later this fall.
I can confirm this is true, and that it's hilarious. The first one was "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" so obviously the fourth one is "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare." Video games are absurd https://t.co/Ghb1m2srC4

Accordinng to Kotaku, the next game in the series will be “heavy on troubling, realistic emotional moments, very much inspired by the controversial No Russian campaign in Modern Warfare 2 that allowed the player to gun down civilians.”
Expect to learn more next week as Activision is likely to reveal Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on May 30.
