The Next Call of Duty Game Will Reportedly Launch on Game Pass With an Announcement Coming on June 9

Last month, The Verge reported that Microsoft has been having an internal debate about putting its newest Call of Duty games day-and-date on Game Pass, but it looks like a decision has been made. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Call of Duty‘s 2024 entry will be coming to Game Pass with an official announcement set to be revealed next month.

“Microsoft plans a major shakeup of its video game sales strategy by releasing the coming installment of Call of Duty to its subscription service instead of the longtime, lucrative approach of only selling it a la carte,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

Those specific Game Pass plans will be revealed at Xbox’s upcoming Game Showcase event on June 9th, which will officially feature our first look at the next Call of Duty game, with more likely to be shown off during its “Redacted” Direct after its Showcase. While we don’t have the name of the first-person shooter franchise’s next entry, we do know that it’s reportedly set to be a sequel in the Black Ops sub-series set to take place sometime during the ’90s Gulf War.

Call of Duty‘s move to Game Pass will be interesting to see go down later this year, especially with Game Pass subscription numbers not growing at the rate that Microsoft is hoping for. While still launching on PC and PlayStation, Call of Duty on Game Pass could move the meter for subscriptions and help shift more Xbox Series consoles, especially if the next game abandons old-gen console platforms.

New Call of Duty titles sell millions of copies for each release in any given year at $70 a pop so it will be fascinating to see if those numbers will be impacted in any way if Call of Duty players opt out of buying the game by going for Game Pass subscription instead. It won’t be just the Call of Duty‘s spotlight at the Xbox Games Showcase as Gears 6 is rumoured to be announced at the game event alongside launch dates for upcoming Xbox first-party titles, including Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Avowed, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
