On the 16th anniversary of Gears of War‘s 2006 launch on Xbox 360, Netflix’s Twitter account announced it’s partnering with Gears of War‘s current developer, The Coalition to bring Gears of War to Netflix. The streamer isn’t just adapting the franchise into a live-action film on its subscription service but says the relationship between the companies will follow up with another project, the Xbox Game Studios franchise will also be getting an adult animated series too.
Gears of War was released 16 years ago today and to mark the occasion, Netflix has partnered with The Coalition to adapt the @GearsofWar video game saga into a live action feature film, followed by an adult animated series — with the potential for more stories to follow! pic.twitter.com/3zInFSnUu4
No exact details were revealed but it’s sounding like the series could act as a follow-up to the story Netflix is telling in the movie, although this is just speculation and nothing has been confirmed at this point. As far as the movie is concerned, this has been a long time coming as the idea of a Gears of War movie has been in development for the last 15 years or so – almost as long as the franchise has been around. No casting announcements were revealed but Dave Bautista has been attached to the project as Marcus Fenix – who has said in past interviews that the opportinity to play the Gears of War character be a “Dream Role.”
It remains to be seen how will Gears of Wars turn out at Netflix, but looking at the streaming service’s other attempts – this is probably its best chance if it can hit the highs of what Netflix did with Arcane and Castlevania, a favourite among fans for it’s an approach to storytelling and animation. Other video game Netflix projects that have been released include Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, DOTA: Dragon’s Blood, Tekken: Bloodline, The Cuphead Show, and more.
