Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth Review

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is Hyper Games’ second trip into the world of Tove Jansson’s Moomins, after the well-received Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley. This time, the focus is on Moomintroll himself, who wakes up too early from his winter hibernation to find Moominvalley changed into a cold, strange place.

Moomintrol: Winter’s Warmth is as cozy as a video game can be. The follow-up to Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley is one game that’ll keep you feeling great as you embark on an emotional journey that mixes exploration, puzzles, and character-driven storytelling almost perfectly.

Nice To See  You, Moomintroll

Moomintroll wakes up alone in the family home at the start of the story. He is confused by the cold winds blowing through the open windows and the strange silence of a valley that should be full of life. He goes outside to explore while Moominmamma and Moominpappa are still sleeping and finds that winter has come in full force, with the icy veil of the Lady of the Cold covering Moominvalley. So it falls to Moomintroll to solve the issues at hand.

The story is based on Moominland Midwinter, and it captures how Moomintroll felt when he first saw winter: scared, sad, and slowly coming to terms with a world that feels both magical and scary. As he explores, he meets old friends like Too Ticky, Misabel, and Sorry-oo, as well as new winter beings that only appear in the cold. Each character brings their own small crisis, and helping them becomes the backbone of the game’s quest structure.

Despite the cozy aesthetic, there are some deeper themes you’ll encounter. Winter’s freeze can mean more than it seems on the surface, offering players insight into how the rotating seasons also signal change and what’s to come. Moomintroll’s journey is about emotional growth and also bringing the warmth back to the valley.

Spring Is Coming

Moomintroll doesn’t fight, foregoing combat for exploration and puzzle-solving. Instead of swords, you use matches to light up darkened areas. There’s also a shovel to dig through snow, gloves to throw snowballs, and an axe you’ll use to chop wood and break ice. Each tool can be upgraded by discovering a corresponding item hidden across the map, so it’s worth seeking these upgrades out if you wish to have the best in-game axe.

The main goal is to prepare for the Great Winter Bonfire, a ritual done to usher in the new season. This means Moomintroll must gather wood, find attendees, and ensure the event goes off without a hitch. Some of the things you do will be repetitive, like finding lost items, and it’s where the game drags down the experience.

And with the tools I mentioned earlier, you’ll dig with your shovel to clear paths, solve environmental puzzles, and help characters overcome personal struggles. Exploration is a big part of Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth, and it’ll be a big part of your time with the game. By exploring the land, you uncover items and quests. Moomintroll must work to complete them. The map is covered in snow, and it’s pretty neat watching Moomintroll dig through the snow and show paths of where you’ve been.

I’m impressed by just how excellent this game looks. It faithfully captures the art style and look of Tove Jansson’s illustrations while adding soft animations and environmental details to bring the world to life. And it’s paired with equally gentle music, soft winds, and crackling fires to make it feel warm in the middle of a deep winter.
