Metaphor: ReFantazio Reveals Combat Mechanics And A Look At The World

Atlus and Studio Zero revealed much new information today for Metaphor: ReFantazio, scheduled to launch on October 11, 2024

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s battle system

Metaphor: ReFantazio features a battle system called Fast and Squad, allowing players to switch between real-time action (Fast mode) and conventional command-based combat (Squad mode). In Fast mode, players can use the lock-on, dash, and evade functions while exploring without entering traditional turn-based combat. Studio Zero recommends reserving this function in an area with lower-level enemies you’ve previously encountered. However, it can also be used to gain an advantage over an enemy before entering a Squad battle.

The Fast mode is ideal for swiftly dispatching lower-ranked foes encountered previously. Through this mode, players can utilize various actions such as locking on, dashing, and evading, ensuring efficient progression through dungeons while fending off enemy attacks. Tailoring one’s combat style to suit specific Archetypes is crucial for optimizing effectiveness in Fast battles.

We also learned of Fae Sight, an ability possessed by the protagonist’s companion, the fairy Gallica, which enhances player awareness within dungeons. It evaluates surroundings and assesses the danger level of encountered enemies, aiding players in making informed combat decisions.

Conversely, enemies highlighted in yellow or red via Gallica’s Fae Sight signify formidable adversaries that require the strategic approach of the Squad command battle. Engaging in prolonged Fast combat can stun enemies, providing an advantageous start to command battles.

Command battles in the game initially support up to four party members, expanding to seven as the story unfolds. Each character possesses unique abilities, contributing to versatile party configurations. The battle system’s streamlined command selection enables swift decision-making, allowing battles to progress briskly.

Transforming into awakened Archetypes during command battles unlocks special skills, which grant a significant advantage when exploited to target enemy weaknesses. However, each Archetype possesses distinct strengths and weaknesses, necessitating careful consideration in party composition and strategy.

In command battles, players must strategically manage their party, utilizing features such as turn handovers, row adjustments, and party member switches. The game’s intentionally high difficulty underscores the importance of tactical decision-making, fostering a rewarding sense of accomplishment upon victory.

Embarking on the journey to claim the throne, the protagonist encounters numerous perilous dungeons, each fraught with powerful enemies and formidable obstacles. However, the promise of valuable treasures and potent armaments within these dungeons makes the challenge worthwhile.

Within this narrative, dungeons come in two varieties: main dungeons, integral to the main storyline, and side dungeons, which feature in side quests and other optional challenges. As the protagonist navigates these dungeons, they confront their fears and forge bonds with supportive followers, unlocking the power of heroic images known as Archetypes through trust and camaraderie.

The awakening of Archetypes allows the protagonist and their party members to transform during command battles, each Archetype possessing unique abilities and personalities. From the versatile Seeker to the Mage’s offensive prowess and the Thief’s resourcefulness, players must strategically choose which Archetypes to awaken and how to configure their party for optimal strength.

As the protagonist’s party members possess rich and diverse characteristics, the combination of Archetypes greatly influences strategy in turn-based battles. By analyzing dungeon environments and enemy types, players can equip their party members with appropriate Archetypes to effectively confront even the most formidable foes.

Beyond combat, the protagonist’s journey involves befriending various individuals who become their strongest supporters. Deepening these bonds unlocks Archetype awakenings, grants access to diverse abilities, and enriches the storytelling experience. Each follower has their unique background and story, offering players the choice of which relationships to prioritize and shaping both party development and the overall narrative arc.

In traversing the dangerous wastelands between major areas, the protagonists rely on the gauntlet runner, a large armoured vehicle designed to navigate safely through such treacherous terrain. This mobile base, powered by magic, serves as their means of travel and support gathering as they journey across the country.

Martira, Old Castle Town, stands as a pastoral retreat, contrasting the Royal Capital. Renowned for its unique cuisine featuring a specific type of larvae, it serves as a source of entertainment for tourists. Despite its tranquil appearance, fear grips the residents due to the surrounding desert harbouring the monstrous Giant Sandworm and an ongoing incident threatening their safety.

The protagonists find themselves drawn into the town’s unfolding events. Each town they visit features a Recruitment Centre, where quests, including defeating menacing monsters, are posted. Completing these tasks offers valuable rewards, but the danger demands careful consideration before acceptance.

Taverns in each town provide respite for the protagonists and locals alike. These establishments not only offer meals but serve as hubs for information exchange. Informants within taverns provide valuable insights ranging from local specialties to enemy traits crucial for dungeon exploration.

Furthermore, essential equipment for the party can be acquired from weapon and armour shops. These shops also offer appraisal services for unidentified loot obtained from dungeons, making them indispensable stops before and after perilous expeditions.

Inns provide rest for weary travellers, offering a chance to reflect on the day’s activities and plan future endeavours. Side quests obtained from various locales significantly strengthen the party and advance the main quest within the designated time frame.

Using maps, players can easily navigate the towns they visit, accessing various facilities and points of interest. The journey takes the protagonists across diverse landscapes, from bustling cities like the Royal Capital to pastoral towns and waterfront cities, each with unique encounters and challenges.

The protagonists’ ultimate goal is to win the people’s trust and emerge victorious in the “Royal Tournament” to save the cursed prince. This journey spans approximately six months, during which players experience a realistic daily life on the road, complete with fixed itineraries and encounters reflective of modern travel experiences.

Players confront societal issues such as poverty and discrimination throughout the adventure, even within the opulent Royal Capital. These encounters add depth to the game’s world, highlighting the struggles faced by its inhabitants and the protagonists’ quest for justice and redemption.
