Konami previewed the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater during today’s Xbox Partner Preview event. The remake, initially revealed earlier in May, finally told what to expect when the project finally launches.
The remake of the PlayStation 2 classic is being made in Unreal Engine 5, and while I’m hoping (like many!) Konami is simply updating the look, I wouldn’t put it past them to spin it into something else. Without Hideo Kojima working on Metal Gear, it is simply too hard to have faith in Konami, significantly since the company has fallen from its perch in recent years as a game developer.
Does the “first in-engine look” do much to assuage those fears? Not really, and to be honest, Snake Eater holds up reasonably well despite being two decades old. Seeing Naked Snake trudging through mud, taking on soldiers, and aiming at enemies is familiar, so while that holds up, I’m curious to see what’s been changed under the hood.
The game’s plot revolves around Naked Snake, a skilled operative who embarks on a mission to rescue a Russian scientist, Sokolov, and retrieve a new superweapon called the Shagohod, which threatens the balance of power during the Cold War. The mission takes place in a dense jungle in the Soviet Union, and Snake encounters a variety of adversaries, including a mysterious female soldier known as The Boss, who was once his mentor.
