Massive Layoffs Hit FireMonkeys

Sad news to report about the Australian gaming studio FireMonkeys, which was formed back in 2012. At the time, the Electronic Arts-owned studio FireMint merged with IronMonkey Studio. Both studios were known for games like Real Racing 3, The Sims: Freeplay and Need for Speed: No Limits on iOS.

According to EA, the studio is refocusing on live services for their current titles and have cancelled their upcoming project, Real Racing 4.

Speaking to Kotaku, a representative for EA that despite the layoffs, FireMonkeys will continue to work on their establish portfolio:

“The FireMonkeys studio is working on some of our most popular mobile games. We recently made a decision to shift teams to focus more on our live services, and have entered into a consultation period that may impact some roles in the studio. We’re working to match skills with opportunities as we go through this period, identifying other opportunities at EA, and providing as much help to our employees as we possibly can.”

Game Works Unite Australia estimates that roughly a quarter of the workforce was let go – around 50 people. The devastatng blow to the Australian game development represents a loss of 5%.
