Mass Effect 5 Mistakenly Teased Commander Shepard’s Return

BioWare Gear Store quickly removed the item description after fan's noticed it.

Yesterday, BioWare put new products on their Gear Store, including a lithograph named Mass Effect Mysteries From The Future. However, it seems like some people working in the store inserted a description that was removed a few hours later.

This description, however, was captured and shared a lot on most social media before it was removed. The original posting said:

“The show goes on. Shepard’s final quest may have ended the threat of the Reapers but at great cost including Earth itself. While Shepard and the survivors are left to pick up the pieces, fans are left wondering what’s next.”

The product description that once mentioned Shepard was quickly replaced with “The threat of the Reapers might have been ended, but at great cost including Earth itself. While the survivors are left to pick up the pieces, fans are left wondering what’s next.”

When fans started sharing the information on Twitter, Michael Gamble, Project Director at BioWare, answered them by saying that “The original description was written by people who run the store and aren’t familiar with the game :)”

Gamble had to put out several fires yesterday and confirmed that it wasn’t intentional and that this was a mistake from the marketing team.

How could this be possible? Let’s take a look back at the possible endings of Mass Effect 3

In Mass Effect 3, there was a matrix of possible endings in the original game considering a choice between three options, each of which gave Shepard a different way to deal with the Catalyst, the ancient AI that operates the Reapers.

  1. The Destroy ending allowed Shepard to eradicate the Reapers along with all synthetic life, including allies;
  2. The Control ending allowed Shepard to become the new non-organic Reaper overmind, directing them to repair and defend the galaxy;
  3. The Synthesis ending resulted in organic-synthetic creations, new races of hybrid. These creations will no longer war with each other.

These endings are available according to the sums of moral decisions made along military strength assembled, affecting the ways in which these paths will end.

This said, which ending may be the one reflecting such a comeback from Commander Shepard? I’d say that the Synthesis would be the one unless Shepard has the possibility to be rejected by the machine when he became the Reaper overmind in the Control ending of Mass Effect 3.

I guess now all we can do is wait and see.
