As we look into February, one of the most anticipated games of the month (for this writer anyway), Like a Dragon: Ishin! developer, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and publisher, Sega have announced a couple of celebrity cameos in the form of former AEW/IWGP world champion, Kenny Omega, and actor, Rahul Kohli (iZombie, Midnight Mass) as the game’s Trooper Card summons mechanic.
Similar to Yakuza: Like a Dragon‘s Poundmates, protagonist Sakamoto Ryoma will be able to summon the essence of one of six celebrity characters to get a powerful temporary edge in battle who get their own artwork as fellow Shinsengumi officers. Omega’s move in the game is called “Essence of the One-Winged Angel” and is a reference to the wrestler’s protected finisher, the One-Winged Angel – which yes is a reference to Final Fantasy VII‘s iconic villain as Omega is a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series.
“I’ve been a fan of the Like a Dragon series for years, and to be forever immortalized in Like a Dragon: Ishin!, the newest entry in one of the most iconic game franchises of all time, is surreal. I’m so excited about my Trooper Card, and I think players are going to love the artwork and attack animation–and the damage I can deal to enemies!” Kenny Omega said in a press statement.
As for Kohli, his move in the game is known as “Essence of Firestorm” which “draws upon his experience in law enforcement to keep the peace” – a reference to his Sheriff’s performance in Midnight Mass. The move engulfs all enemies in a huge flame blast that comes in their direction which Kohli jokes was basically him as a teenager. The celebrity inclusions will be available as free DLC with early access starting on February 17th, both are fantastic choices for the game as both men are avid gamers and more importantly huge fans of the series.
“As someone who is emotionally invested in the Like a Dragon story, I’m nervously excited to take on this mantle of being a small part of Ryoma’s journey. The close relationship that Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have with their fan community, has been really exciting to see manifest in these cards.” Rahul Kohli said in a statement.
Like a Dragon: Ishin! is a remake of the original Japanese-only release and is set to release on February 21st for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, & Xbox Series X|S.
