The worlds of professional wrestling and video games are once again colliding. On last night’s episode of AEW Dynamite, the promotion released a promo of another match between Kenny Omega and the Don Callis family, but this time, things are going to get brutal as the match is set to be a Like a Dragon Gaiden street fight.
Like a lot of other video game crossover promoted matches that AEW has put on, I can’t say for certain what the Like a Dragon Gaiden match will be, but it will be a street fight, meaning no rules with a possibility of weapons related to the franchise popping up. The team-up between AEW and the Sega-owned property is on brand for Kenny Omega, as the Canadian-born wrestler has been a fan of the series for years and was even featured as a summon in Like a Dragon: Isshin!, according to an IGN interview. The match will air on AEW Dynamite on TBS and for us in Canada on TSN2 at 8 PM. ET.
For those unaware, the saga between Kenny Omega and Don Callis-led faction came after a multi-decade relationship between literal family in everything, but blood came to an end; Kenny even called him Uncle Don in his youth and was invited to Thanksgiving. Kenny Omega brought Callis back to the world of professional wrestling in 2017 as a commentator in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Six years later, Callis figuratively slapped that hand away when “Uncle Don” turned on his nephew by stabbing him with a screwdriver during a steel cage match with Jon Moxley (fka Dean Ambrose) on May 10th, 2023. Since then, the Canadian wrestler has had multiple run-ins with the faction, leading to the reunion with Hangman Adam Page as part of The Elite.
On the not-so-nice side, Will Ospreay, who lost to the “Bes Bout Machine” in a fantastic match for the IWGP US Title at Wrestle Kingdom in January, teamed up with Callis to enact his revenge in another fantastic match at AEW’s Forbidden Door PPV to win back his belt. Later on, Callis tries to enlist his long-time friend Chris Jericho to the faction and then unsurprisingly turns on the “GOAT,” enlisting Jericho’s former stablemate and mentee Sammy Guevara. All this led to a recent but shocking team-up between Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega, with two Winnipeg-born wrestlers forming the Golden Jets tag team. Now this Like a Dragon Gaiden street fight is up next in that long 2023 saga.
