After Two Decades, Larry Hyrb ‘Major Nelson’ Is Leaving Xbox

After two decades working on Xbox, Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hyrb is leaving Microsoft. The news come from Hyrb’s Twitter account, where he revealed his departure. Over the last two decades, under the ‘Major Nelson’ moniker, Hyrb has been one of the faces of Xbox, where he began on the original Xbox team.

“After 20 incredible years, I have decided to take a step back and work on the next chapter of my career,” he wrote. “As I take a moment and think about all we have done together, I want to thank the millions of gamers around the world who have included me as part of their lives. Also, thanks to Xbox team members for trusting me to have a direct dialogue with our customers. The future is bright for Xbox and as a gamer, I am excited to see the evolution.”

Hyrb also starred on the Official Xbox Podcast and announced the show would take a hiatus and return later in a new format.

Reacting to the news, both former Xbox Corporate Vice President – Xbox Live, Xbox Game Pass, Mixer Mike Ybarra and Geoff Keighley wished Hyrb well.

Thanks Larry for everything you have done to make Xbox what it is today. Incredible impact, always a positive attitude, and a pleasure to work with,” says Ybarra.

“Thanks for all you have done over all these decades for our industry – still fondly remember hosting many Xbox launches with you,” Keighley replied to Hyrb.

For now, though, Hryb will be taking a vacation and will announce his next move when he’s ready to reveal it.
