BAFTA Lara Croft

Lara Croft Voted Most Iconic Video Game Character In BAFTA Poll

With a few more surprises as well

It’s likely a discussion you’ve had with friends or online or even a question you’ve asked yourself… who is the most popular or iconic video game character of all time?

Super Mario has been named the most recognizable character in any medium worldwide, but a new BAFTA poll has crowned Lara Croft as “the most iconic”.

British Academy of Film and Television Arts hands out dozens of awards each year in film and TV and also holds its own video game ceremony next week, on April 11th. This will be the 20th BAFTA Game Awards and to celebrate they helped launch this poll. 4,000 respondents voted and a 20 of the top choices have been named.

Lara Croft, Super Mario, Pikachu, and the Rest of the List

Lara Craft sits atop the list. She’s iconic for several reasons, including Tomb Raider games that date back to 1996, the Sega Saturn, and PlayStation. Sure, there’s an argument to be made about who can be named number one, but the votes were in, and Lara’s 15 game appearances, movies, and shows pushed her to the top.

BAFTA says that the character’s original voice actor, Shelley Blond, will be presenting at the upcoming awards show.

Right behind her is Mario. The red-hatted hero from Nintendo could be the first name that pops in your head regarding iconic video game characters. Regardless of where he is on this particular list, the Mushroom Kingdoms stomping plumber has been incredibly popular for decades.

Rounding out the top 3 is Agent 47, the lead character in the Hitman franchise. For some, this could also come as a bit of a surprise, as he has not been around as long as many others on this list. Debuting in 2000, Agent 47 has had a resurgence in recent years with the popular and well reviewed games like Hitman 3.

Whether Lara Croft sits at the top of your list, other icons appear from 4-20.

Those include Sonic, Pikachu, and of course Link from the Legend of Zelda franchise. Your experience with these characters may begin with one of the most renowned games in The Ocarina of Time, or the first Pokemon games on the original Game Boy.

Further down the BAFTA list are Master Chief, Kratos, Solid Snake, Cloud Strife, and Ellie Williams.
