Several months ago, it was revealed that Netflix is working on a Gears of War adaptation for the streaming giant. Now we know that John Spaihts, who wrote Dune and Doctor Strange, will work with The Coalition on bringing the popular Xbox series to a new medium.
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” Spaihts said in a statement to Variety. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
The Coalition responded to the news by saying that it is an “honour” to work with Spaihts on the series.
Getting Gears of War into film and television has been a long-time coming as several people have attempted to bring the series to a new medium but often with hurdles making it impossible. Variety says that New Line Cinema briefly held the rights to a film adaptation in 2007, followed by Scott Stuber, now head of original films at Netflix, who came on as a producer in 2013 with Epic Games. Universal then hired F. Scott Frazier to write an adaptation in 2018, which has since lied dormant.
