The blocky master-builder always struck me as looking more like Ryan Reynold’s Guy from the COVID-streaming-and-return-to-theatres hit Free Guy than live-action Aquaman Jason Momoa, but it would appear cult classic Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess and recent Academy Awards golden girl Mary Parent are thinking outside of the boxy body type.
Warner Bros. previously tapped Shawn Levy and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenny before bowing out of the project. This led to the film being delayed indefinitely before listing 2022 as a release year. Now it seems to be coming together.
Gaming movies seem to be having the next big moment in the film world, as the aforementioned Free Guy seemingly saved the theatre industry after a particularly rough COVID slump. And the recently released Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is doing well with critics and fans, proving that video game film adaptations aren’t a one-off and that the history of films based on video games doing poorly with wider audiences isn’t holding the whole industry back from the silver screen any longer.
