After last week’s news of Immortals of Aveum’s July release, developer Ascendent Studios has followed up on that reveal with a deeper look at the EA Original in the form of a brand new trailer featuring six minutes of first-person magic-wielding and shooting gameplay footage, according to a game press release.
Immortals of Aveum‘s gameplay (content warning: contains flashing images) shows off the game’s protagonist, Jak taking on Rasharnian forces after joining an elite order of battlemages as they attempt to save a world on the edge of the abyss; you know the normal stuff. The trailer focuses on the game’s spell-based combat as players will be able to wield three different types of magic including Force (Blue), Life (Green), and Chaos (Red). Additionally, Sigils, rings, and totems will allow players to customize their own play style.
When it releases Immortals of Aveum will be the first game that Ascendent Studios has developed in Unreal Engine 5 as they “leverage the newest technologies including Lumen dynamic lighting and Nanite (polygon) performance boost.” Former creative director of Dead Space and Call of Duty, Bret Robbins is leading the ship for the EA original independent studio.
In a separate blog post, Robbins details some of the work being done to many of the in-game environments.
“In any other game, you might see what looks like a big craggy wall, but it’s actually flat with a craggy texture and maybe some shader trickery. We don’t have to do that; we actually build an object with all of that detail, and Nanite determines whether that detail shows up based on your distance.”
Robbins says that switching between in-game cinematics and first-person control will be seamless and visual fidelity will be one-to-one. Everything will occur in real time with the only changes being the depth of field, motion blur, and other cinematic cutscene effects.
Additionally, with your magic powers, you can transform the landscape around you. The world of Aveum has structures and statues reaching into the sky; with your powers of the sigil, you can create new paths to traverse and explore. Massive statutes will movies to help guide your path and overgrowth will untangle itself to help you.
Immortals of Aveum is set to launch on July 20, 2023, on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and EA App), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
